The Sandbar Season
August on the Wisconsin River. Two full days on the water, evening topwater, chef-prepared meals, and riverside lodging during the best smallmouth window of the season.
AUGUST ON THE WISCONSIN RIVER
In August, the lower Wisconsin River changes.
Water levels settle. Sandbars rise. The river opens into wide braided channels and long, fishable stretches that feel entirely different from any other time of year.
Smallmouth begin feeding higher in the water column. Topwater becomes a core part of the daily approach. Some of the heaviest fish of the season make themselves known.
Whether you're coming from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, or anywhere in between — this is the trip that makes August feel intentional.
The Sandbar Season is our annual multi-day August smallmouth experience built around that window.
WHY AUGUST IS DIFFERENT
August smallmouth fishing on the Lower Wisconsin River is defined by sand and current.
Exposed sandbars influence where fish hold, how they travel, and how they respond to presentations. Current seams lengthen and stabilize. Fish push bait toward the surface, eat frogs, and chase just about anything that finds itself on the surface. Visual eats become part of the daily rhythm.
Evening sessions can overlap with The Crash — one of the most remarkable smallmouth feeding events found anywhere on the river. Learn more about The Crash
It is one of the most dynamic and consistent periods of the season for anglers willing to spend consecutive days on the water. The Sandbar Season exists to take full advantage of that.
WHO IS THIS TRIP FOR
The Sandbar Season is a strong fit for anglers who:
Value multi-day immersion over a single day on the water
Want to experience peak August smallmouth fishing on the Wisconsin River
Appreciate thoughtful instruction and a deeper understanding of the river
Prefer cabin lodging while staying close to the fishery
Enjoy the balance between fishing hard and slowing down
You don't need to be an expert angler. You do need to want to have a good time.
HOW THE DAYS UNFOLD
Each trip is structured around when the river fishes best. We fish hard during the productive windows, rest during the slow ones, and eat well throughout.
SLOT 1 | August 14–16
Day 1 — Arrive afternoon. Get settled, meet the crew, and ease into the river for an evening fishing session. Return to the cottage for a chef-prepared dinner.
Day 2 — The full day. Breakfast at camp. Morning session on the water. Midday siesta — lunch and time to recharge while the heat peaks. Evening session during the most active window of the day. Dinner at camp.
Day 3 — Send it home. Breakfast at camp. A full morning session with lunch on the water. Depart early afternoon.
SLOT 2 | August 17–19
Day 1 — Arrive midday. Lunch at camp. Afternoon and evening fishing session. Dinner at camp.
Day 2 — The full day. Breakfast at camp. Morning session on the water. Midday siesta — lunch and time to recharge while the heat peaks. Evening session during the most active window of the day. Dinner at camp.
Day 3 — Send it home. Breakfast at camp. Morning session on the water. Lunch at camp. Depart late morning.
All meals are prepared by our team. Sessions are timed around the most productive windows of the day — not just to maximize hours on the water, but to make the most of each one.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
GUIDED FISHING
Fishing is structured into sessions timed around the most productive parts of the day — mornings, evenings, and the late light that August does best.
TERMINAL TACKLE
Leaders, tippets, and flies. Additional equipment may be available upon request.
FAMOUS CUISINE
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner for each day on the water. This is not an afterthought — the food is a genuine part of the experience.
RIVERSIDE COTTAGE LODGING
Comfortable, clean, and selected specifically for its proximity to the river. Being close to the water is what makes the schedule work — the midday reset, the evening sessions, the ability to step back out when the light changes.
THE BEAC CAMP EXPERIENCE
We've been running fish camps since 2016. The details that make it feel right — the meals, the pace, the time around the fire — those come from years of doing this and caring about getting it right.
A GOSH DARN GOOD TIME!
We can't control the conditions. We can control everything else.
It's official, Kyle and crew are top of the game. Nothing is left out when they plan a trip for you. Fishing, food, accommodations, conversations, extracurricular activities–just perfect. One of THE BEST outfits I've ever had the pleasure spending time and fishing with.

A NOTE FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER FROGS 'N FOOTBALLS
Some of you know this window from an earlier trip we ran called Frogs 'n Footballs. That experience was built around a specific late-summer frog pattern that, in the right conditions, could be exceptional.
Over time we realized that stretch of the season offers more than any single approach. Some evenings it's frogs. Some evenings bait gets pushed to the surface and things get loud. Often it's just consistently good, visual fishing throughout the day in a setting that's hard to beat.
Sandbar Season is what that trip grew into — built around the full picture of what August offers on this river, not one moment within it.
THE SANDBAR SEASON FAQs
-
Yes, with a note. Our pricing is based on two anglers per guide. If you're coming solo, the cost reflects a two-angler rate unless we're able to connect you with another solo angler. We're happy to try to make that match — just reach out and let us know your situation. Fishing with a partner not only reduces the cost, it tends to make the trip better.
-
The cottage has two private queen rooms and one larger shared room with a queen and single bed. Most anglers attend with a fishing partner, and room arrangements work out naturally. If you have specific questions about the setup, just ask.
-
We fish in rain. We fish in wind. We plan for conditions and adapt when we need to. The only thing that stops us is lightning or genuinely dangerous weather — and that's rare. Come with a good attitude and the right gear and you'll be fine. Refunds are not issued unless severe weather causes you to miss more than 75% of your fishing time.
-
A mix. You'll fish from the jet boat and have opportunities to wet-wade from sandbars and shallow water. If wet-wading isn't your preference, the boat works all day. We'll customize around what you enjoy.
-
Yes, we specialize in fly fishing but we welcome artificial-only conventional anglers. We encourage all anglers to have a good time and make the best out for the conditions.
-
Experience helps, but we work with anglers of all skill levels. Multiple days on the water with a guide will move your fishing forward in ways a single day simply can't.
-
As early as possible. Group size is intentionally limited, and we build the trip around the people who commit early.
We're easier to get to than you might think.
